01 · Food-Contact Paper
Paper Quality Starts With the Raw Material
Paper used for food packaging is generally produced from virgin wood pulp, and particular care must be taken with materials intended for direct food contact. Paper made from mixed or unsuitable recycled fibers should not be used where it does not meet food-contact requirements. For this reason, food-grade paper is commonly produced from primary pulp manufactured directly from wood.
In recent years, many pulp-producing countries have reduced logging and pulp production as part of environmental protection and forest-management policies. As a result, pulp prices have risen significantly. Under increasing price competition, some paper manufacturers may try to reduce production costs by increasing the amount of calcium carbonate filler or by blending other fibers such as bamboo pulp into the paper.

Why Fiber Composition Matters to a Paper Cup Machine
Bamboo pulp is not considered harmful to human health. However, when used for paper cup production, it can shorten the service life of certain machine components and cause faster and more severe wear to the cutting blades of both the punching machine and the paper cup machine than calcium carbonate (lime) powder.
03 · Simple Light Test
Check the Internal Fiber Structure Against Strong Light
One simple way to check whether paper may contain bamboo pulp or recycled fiber is to hold the paper up against a strong light and examine its internal fiber structure.
As shown in Fig. 1, if the paper looks relatively dark and you can clearly see a coarse, uneven fiber structure through the sheet, this may indicate that bamboo pulp, recycled fiber, or a mixture of other coarse fibers has been used. Paper with this kind of rough internal structure is generally less desirable for high-speed paper cup production, especially where clean cutting and long blade life are important.
By comparison, Fig. 2 shows paper that appears more uniform and ivory-colored when held against the light. The internal structure looks finer, denser, and smoother, and the surface is also noticeably more even. This type of paper is more consistent with high-quality virgin pulp paper and is generally more suitable for paper cup production.
For paper cup manufacturing, it is advisable to choose paper with a uniform fiber structure, smooth surface, good formation, and consistent thickness, and to avoid paper that shows excessive dark areas, coarse fibers, or irregular internal texture when viewed against light.
04 · Production Test
Check for Excessive White Powder During Paper Cup Forming
Therefore, because such paper may contain undesirable or potentially harmful substances, it is advisable to use paper made from 100% virgin pulp for food-contact paper cups. During cup forming, you should also check whether an excessive amount of white powder is being released and accumulating on the paper cup machine or punching machine.
For this reason, before placing a large-volume order, it is strongly recommended to purchase a small quantity first, test the material in actual production, and confirm its quality and machine compatibility before proceeding with bulk purchasing.

Food-Contact Compliance Should Also Be Verified
100% virgin pulp is an important material-quality indicator, but it does not by itself prove food-contact compliance. Before purchasing paper for direct food contact, ask the paper supplier for the applicable food-contact declaration or test documentation, coating specification, material composition, and any compliance documents required in the country where the finished paper cups will be sold.
